Switching from a doctor to their PA in the same practice

Hi, I was just wondering whether this would be acceptable on my part? Basically, my doctor who I’ve been with the last few years is hardly ever at the location I see them at. It’s almost impossible to find a time to set up an appointment with them, at least not one that works for me. I actually half thought that they had left! However, their PA has tons of availability most days. I didn’t realize that you can apparently have a PA as your PCP, and at this point I’m interested in possibly just switching over to the PA. Looking at their background online, I actually feel like they might be a better fit for me, anyways.

Obviously, the PA is under my current doctor’s supervision. I wouldn’t want to do anything wrong or hurt any feelings by making this move, but just thought I’d check and see what people here’s thoughts are? And if I can do this, would it be a good idea for me to send any sort of message to my doctor to explain why I’m moving over to the PA, or should I just request the switch on my insurance site? I have an appointment tomorrow with the PA (couldn’t get in to see my doc!), so I suppose I could mention this tomorrow.

Employer offered plan meets affordability requirements for me, but does not for any other family members

US Healthcare question- kind of a shot in the dark on trying to get some answers….

Just got a new job after being unemployed for the last 10 months or so, where we were getting healthcare through the marketplace.

Employer has a plan offered where they pay 50% of premium for employee but 0% for any family members added to the policy.

With the 50% covered for me, it meets the requirements for affordability and coverage for me, coming in at roughly 5% of household income.

However, when including cost of wife and child, it moves to taking up a bit north of 15% of gross household income.

Does anyone know if it is possible for me to take my employer offered insurance, but for my wife and kid to get the Advance Premium Tax Credit rates through the marketplace, due to the policy not meeting the affordability requirements for them?

Or are we pretty much screwed and stuck with paying a bit under roughly 1/6th of our income with no options for credits or rebates?

Cigna PPO vs EPO Health Insurance Plan (Baby on the way)

Hello!

I'm currently exploring health plan options during my company's open enrollment (located in the USA). I'm weighing between the PPO Premier and EPO Premier plans.

Here is a link with details and my bi-weekly premium rates. https://imgur.com/a/oUp56We

Starting January 1, the plan will cover my wife, son, and myself. My wife is expecting our second child in June, so our hope is to determine which plan is more beneficial financially for the upcoming delivery. All our current doctors and the local hospital (where we will deliver) are in-network.

My wife and I are both 30 and healthy, so we don't expect any other large medical bills in 2024.

Could you help me decide which plan is more suitable? I realize the EPO has higher premiums, but I'm wondering if its no deductible and 100% coinsurance features are more cost-effective in the long run. Thank you!

My wife was served over $300 that fell through the cracks

This post is mostly just to vent.

Tl/dr: a bill from our pediatrician’s office fell through the cracks. Within six months, we were served papers telling us we’re being sued for that amount plus “reasonable attorneys fees.” The amount owed is now over 800 dollars.

We just received new court documents advising a default judgement has been made. My wife has been a wreck all morning after opening the papers. For the record, I did try multiple times to help my wife navigate the situation, providing advice and such, but she kind of acted like I was over complicating things and didn’t want to hear what I had to say. She thought she had it all under control, which is understandable. She kept getting caught up on the fact that she meant to pay it, and was meaning to pay it any day now once her paychecks come in, but she’s a mom who recently gave birth and doesn’t have a lot of money (I’ve offered to help but money is tight from my end too) so it’s hard to keep everything straight (her words). She feels personally attacked that they actually went through suing her. “Salt on the wound” she keeps saying. From her perspective, we always paid all bills (100% true), live frugally in a tiny two bedroom house, have two cheap cars that we need to get to work, etc., and have paid countless medical bills so far, so she feels like she’s being unjustly punished for all of this (which I think is honestly a little valid). It’s been immensely frustrating and put strain on our relationship a little this morning. Plus, it wasn’t good having the kids see us fight like that. She’s the type that cries when getting a speeding ticket (for context)

Then I remember back when I was 17, as an exchange student in Germany, able to experience what it is like to live in a society where healthcare is seen as a right and provided basically free of charge…where being sued over healthcare costs/debt simply doesn’t exist, and the stresses that families and parents feel over medical costs simply doesn’t exist … and my blood boils!!! No I didn’t have to wait in line in Germany…I got in to see a doctor faster than ever in the U.S., within 10 minutes for an UNSCHEDULED visit…basically unheard of here in grand ol’ America, and it cost me like 20 euros as an American!

And still, all the Americans around me will defend the status quo of our shitty, overly expensive and inefficient healthcare system.

How can I negotiate a medical bill?

Hey guys... I was hit with a $5,000 bill after a visit to the ER last weekend. I'm wondering how I can begin the process of disputing this? I feel like the bill is ridiculous based on the duration / severity of the issue. Would appreciate any guidance. This was an in-network charge

That said, I came across some services like https://baymaxhealth.com/ or Resolve to help tackle these bills for me for free and save me some time. Does anyone have experience with these and do they work?

Account linked with twin brother and then locked out

I have been having an issue for over a month now, and the insurance company has now closed 3 tickets on me without a resolution. I have a twin brother that works a different job than me, and he gets UHC insurance from his employer. I get UMR from mine, which is a subsidiary of UHC. Somehow our accounts got linked a month ago, which caused both of our accounts to get locked out.

After being told 3 different times that tickets were created and escalated to the engineering departments, I was finally told today that both of us have given the wrong social security numbers to our HR departments, and need to call them to update it, followed by the UHC and UMR tickets being closed. This is untrue and we both confirmed with our respective jobs that they have the correct SSNs for UMR and UHC to pull.

When the offices open back up on Monday, we both plan to call our HR departments and asking them to call the member e-services line for UMR/UHC and see if they can straighten it out. Does anyone have any other suggestions I can do to force the insurance company to take action if our HR departments can't help? I'm not sure as to how they think the social security numbers were incorrect, all the way in November when we've been using the insurance just fine all year so far.

Super High Deductible Insurance

Does anyone know of an insurance provider that has a super high deductible and extremely low premium? Family of three M33/F33/M2 with one more on the way. I have insurance through my work but we pay about $1000 a month. However, I rarely go to the doctor, most of my wife’s doctors are out of network or they aren’t covered. It seems like we would be better off paying everything out of pocket and having an emergency fund instead of paying the premium. I’m just worried of having a major emergency and having zero coverage. Any suggestions? Thanks

How do I pay for AICD replacement surgery next year?

I live in Oregon and am covered by OHP, but it’s time to renew and I will no longer qualify for next year - I am just barely over the income limit. I’m due to have my defibrillator replaced next year and I have no idea what to do, I can barely afford rent. What are my options?

As horrifying as it sounds, I don’t think an immense amount of debt is worth it to me. I don’t know a lot about health insurance because I’ve always been covered by medicaid, so any advice would be appreciated as I start to learn.

Used to go to a doc in this clinic for about three years. Never felt they cared. Rushed physicals and demeanour on the phone was not so nice at times.

Maybe I’m very particular. They just weren’t that good I feel- although they had great connections with others professionals I made the quick decision to switch.

I found a doc in the same clinic and they are accepting new patients. Decided to switch with them.

Afraid of coming across the old doc and they accusing me why I switched….

Urgent care - I feel like patients don’t care if we get sick from them

I work at an urgent care and 90% of our patients present with the same things - cough, nasal congestion, fever, sore throat. In the days leading up to thanksgiving, nearly everyone said they just wanted to be tested for covid/flu/strep so that they wouldn’t infect their family over the holiday. These same patients were maskless and would cough / sneeze on me, other providers, MAs, etc. It infuriates me that they seemingly only care if they spread their illness to their loved ones, but not if they infect healthcare staff. Working with sick patients is part of the job, so I’m not complaining about that aspect bc I took an oath to care for them. I would just like a small amount of the courtesy shown to them to be reciprocated for members of staff. Do patients think that healthcare workers are immune to all communicable diseases? Or do they just not care? This is troubling me and dampening my morale. I am genuinely hoping for insight.

Americans perspective on illness

It's weird to me that people in America still downplay illness.

Preface: - it's the holidays and all of my family and my partner's family know how much I love this holiday because it's my favorite kind of comfort food. - I am an American - I am a healthcare worker that started my career in 2018. - I have been sick with something that I have confirmed isnt covid. - I have been sick for over a week and when I get sick like this I gotta let it ride its course and the course is usually unpleasant to listen to/be around. - I have no idea what I have, the last time I felt this bad I was 14 and it turned out to be swine flu

I was going to just "hard stop. No" @ flying out at all but my partner and family reallyreally wanted me to come even after I warned everyone ahead of time I am sick. I confirmed with everyone if it is okay if I am around them. Even then, I refuse to take off a mask around them and distance while eating. I have only allowed mask off in a separate, closed off room that I advised be torched (sanitized) after I leave.

Even then, it takes me hacking and dying in a room over for my partners parents to be like "...... do you maybe wanna gtfo?"

My question is why does American culture need such a song and dance before theyre like "oh shit maybe this needs to be taken seriously"

Like, my partner's grandpa literally got a chemo dose the other day for his pancreatic cancer???? Do people not know how easily a random cough could take someone down who is old and immunocompromised?

I should have stayed home and not been pressured

Building for the patient in the US

Dear all,

We are a young startup working towards solving data access problems for patients in the US.

We think that patients get treated very poorly in the current ecosystem, and we want to change it.

As of now, we have built an app that lets you access your healthcare data, and further provides relevant insights.

I want to discuss the problem with you to learn and build better. Not sure if this is the right place to do it, but if you have ever sought access to your healthcare data, please let me know. I would love to learn from you.

Would it be a mistake to switch from United Healthcare to Health Net to save $2500 annually off of premiums?

I currently am on a silver PPO UHC plan through my employer. They decided to include fertility coverage in the plan for 2024, and that together with inflation is raising the annual cost for the same plan by $2500. Health Net offers a similar silver plan for what I'm currently paying. I would love to save the money, but I need to be confident that Health Net won't engage in any scammy behavior. I'm on a Tier 2/3 prescription that I pay $50 a month for. Without insurance, it would be 2K a month. I checked Health Net's formulary, and they have a different brand of the same medication available. I also will be switching doctors in January, if that matters.

I wish some doctors' offices had better payment options

First of all, I'm sure not all doctor's offices and insurance are not like this. I have work-based insurance, I went to a hand doctor for Carpal Tunnel in my left hand. After a test on my hand, it was determined I needed surgery. They set it for 2 weeks from that day, before I left I was told to pick up my orders on the day before the surgery. Within 2 weeks, I was called 2 or 3 times as a reminder for my orders.

The day before I went to get my orders I got a call from the office it was another reminder and then they said it. "Remember to bring the $500 tomorrow for your orders" That threw me off completely, in those 2 weeks they never mentioned once the $500. They said it was my co-pay and when I asked how come I had not been made aware of this sooner and they just said "I don't know, remember to bring it tomorrow" and they hung up. I didn't have it at that time, but what got me mad was how the office handled it day the next day.

When I went to the office, the man in charge in charge of the orders said to me with a little laughing smirk on his face. "We told you yesterday about the $500, that wasn't enough time?" Like I had it in my pocket or something. It took everything in me not to backhand him because of the way was speaking to me. I asked the billing manager if there was a payment plan she "No, can I have your card to pay it or do you want to pay with cash?" I said no wasn't going to pay it. Then they said when you can afford it call us come by and we'll schedule you. I said no I wasn't gonna do the surgery and I left.

Then for 3 days straight, I was getting calls from both the doctor's office and the hospital and it was almost to the point of harassment. Doctor's offices were demanding I go through with the surgery and pay them the $500 after repeatedly telling them no. Plus the hospital was calling me I needed to pay $1,000 right there and then and "You need your surgery". Both placed I asked them are you going to let me do a payment plan and they said no all in full. For 3 days straight I was getting these calls, technically 5 days because I started to ignore the calls.

I went for a 2nd opinion a few weeks later from a different doctor. They did the same test and it was determined I didn't need surgery. I was given the Cortisone and therapy now my hand feels a lot better.
