Why does Flexible Savings Account have "Lose All Money" Expiration Policy?

What is the government motivation behind, having workers lose money in Flexible Savings Account, if they don't use it at end of year? I could understand giving it back, or adding another 10% tax. But totally losing the money 100%? That doesn't sound very nice from both congress people, who just take money from poor, hardworking citizens.

Any thoughts behind this motivation?

"The catch: If you enroll, IRS rules require you to spend the money you contribute into your account by an annual deadline. In other words, if you don’t use it, you lose it: the money is forfeited."

Taxed on copay?

My husband has been going to this very shady doctor’s office for a few weeks now for some health concerns, and besides the staff being very rude and disorganized, they’ve been taxing him on his copay. It’s $15 but they pull out a calculator and tell him he owes $15.45. This feels illegal but maybe I’m projecting based on my overall distrust of this office.

Really confused about what I should do. Need insurance for just 2 months

My SO took me off his work’s health insurance plan so I won’t have coverage beginning Jan 1, 2024. I didn’t realize how odd the open enrollment timing for my employer is - it just started and I enrolled but my coverage doesn’t begin until March 1st, 2024.

In MD, the website only allows you to select insurance for an entire year so I don’t want to do that since I already enrolled in my employers plan and it’s way better and cheaper.

I guess I missed the boat to enroll in a short term plan since a google search tells me that open enrollment was only until Dec 15. I don’t qualify for a life event.

What can I do here?

Need guidance on navigating the US healthcare system

I am overwhelmed and feel like I am missing a lot of information on what options are available to me either out of pocket or through insurance. As immigrants, we aren't that familiar with navigating the medical / insurance system here.

I have come to depend on family for a lot of my caregiving and keep learning about support options like transportation, home nurse etc. one at a time, almost always by accident.

Are there resources we can talk to, or read up on, so we know what benefits we can avail to make life a little easier with all the health conditions? The doctors I have been seeing so far haven't been very helpful, and being on Medi-Cal / Medicaid already limits how many providers I have access to.
