growing healthcare clinics .... advice needed.

I was thinking of starting a consultancy that would help bring patients to healthcare centers, specifically I would concentrate on bringing people with substance abuse disorders and mental health struggles to psychiatrists.

Does anyone have any input on how one would reach potential patients and bring in more traffic to the doctor's office? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Dental Insurance in Canada

Hi,

I recently moved to US from Canada. I had an ongoing Invisalign treatment in Canada that I now want to continue with the same dentist. Is it possible to get dental insurance that can cover my treatment in Canada while I continue to work and stay in US. Needless to say, I will be travelling to Canada for the treatment when required.

TIA

Vaccine costs in Pharmacy versus at a PCP office?

Having difficulty figuring out if my vaccine is covered if I go there to a Pharmacy and order it for myself versus if I get it recommended by my dr. I already got my first dose of HPV vaccine at my PCP and that was fully covered but I am confused if I sign up for my second dose at my pharmacy by myself is it still covered since I am a 32 year old female. I have Aetna PPO gold but I don't really understand what the different brands and categories of insurance do.

I will try to get your medical bills lowered for free

Hello,

Recently I found out that 80% of U.S medical bills contain errors (inflated charges, duplicate charges, and typos).

I am a student at USC looking to gain insights into the medical bill negotiation. To do this, me and my team want to negotiate for you any outrageous hospital bills you have gotten. We would be communicating with your hospital to get the bill as low as possible.

Please reach out if you're interested in letting us do this for you (for free, of course). We can set up a video call if you need to prove this is legitimate.

Health insurance medical expenses appeal

My father was admitted to the hospital after experiencing dizziness, prompting the arrival of an ambulance. He reached the emergency room at 10 a.m., where he underwent an X-ray and a CT scan. Six hours later, at 4 p.m., the attending physician informed us that he needed to be admitted due to the presence of an uneven smile, which raised concerns about a possible transient ischemic attack that would not be detectable through the X-ray or CT scan. Consequently, further tests were required, including consultations with a neurologist. An echocardiogram and MRI were performed later that night at 10 p.m. He was discharged the following day, and fortunately, all results came back negative, indicating no issues.

A few weeks later, I received a notification from the insurance company stating that they would not cover the expenses, leaving us responsible for nearly $3,000. The denial was based on the assertion that his admission was unnecessary for treatment. Is there a valid reason to pursue an appeal? Would it not have been possible to conduct the MRI while he was still in the emergency room, thereby avoiding the need for admission?

Confused about when ACA compliant insurance starts covering me

I am planning on getting sterilization surgery soon. I don't have insurance at the moment, but found out that for the exact surgery I want, ACA compliant insurance is required to cover 100% of the costs as long as its billed correctly with the right codes. However, depending on how elections go, it's possible sterilization procedures will no longer be covered after inaugeration.

So I started looking into an ACA compliant insurance to apply for asap so I can get this surgery done before inaugeration and still have it paid for, but I was told that I can only apply for this type of insurance starting November 1st, no earlier. So I made a post on reddit explaining my situation and asking how soon after starting the insurance can it cover my surgery, and from the anwers I got, I was told that if I apply on Nov 1st, it sort of just depends on the individual insurance company, some might require up to a 30 day waiting period, while others will start covering you immediately with no wait time. So what I was told was that by December, I should be good to go to have the surgery and have it covered by insurance.

So I booked my consultation for the surgery and had the appointment today. I paid out of pocket for this but let my doctor know I will be getting insurance Nov 1st and can schedule the surgery afterwards. So the surgery is now scheduled for Dec 6th. When I got home and told my mom the news, she immediately asked why the heck I scheduled it for December when the insurance wont start covering me until January. I got super confused because I was told I could get coverage starting in November/December, not that I would have to wait until the new year to start getting covered. I haven't actually called the insurance companies to ask, because I still need to apply and I'm waiting for November for that. When I search up certain ACA complaint insurances, I see websites come up that claim you can apply now and start getting coverage the same day.

Pretty much I'm confused. In short word, I need to get an ACA complaint insurance. My surgery is scheduled for Dec 6th, but is that too early? Should I reschedule my surgery for January? If so hopefully the doctor has availabilites between the 1-20th... If there is a way for insurance to cover me sooner than January, where do I apply for that? And when do I apply?

This is one of those situations where I just really need to get this surgery done before January 20th. I'm on a tight deadline here and I'm worried about dragging it out too long, which is why ideally I'd love to do the surgery in December rather than waiting until January. I'm just so confused now about applying and coverage etc. When do I start getting covered?

Sorry if this is an obvious question. I have never had insurance before for anything, except when I was still under my parents for other stuff. But I've never had health insurance so I have no idea how this stuff works.

Why is preventative medicine discouraged?

I’ve received healthcare in a number of countries, primarily the US. It seems that the number 1 priority of the doctors is treating the symptoms, number two is treating diagnosed conditions, and actually preventing disease before it occurs is at the very bottom of the list.

Most chronic illnesses have warning signs that start months or years in advance, for example cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and several autoimmune diseases. Why do they wait until it’s too late to actually take action? One time when I brought up my concern about this I was accused of being a hypochondriac.

Ohio insurance

The hospital I go to for all my doctors is with memorial health system and the only insurances on healthcare . gov is caresource marketplace, anthem Blue Cross Blue shield, and medmutual but I'm pretty sure my hospital only accepts caresource marketplace Medicare and the other two insurances are super expensive for me right now. Is there someone I can go to to help me find new health insurance? No my work doesn't offer it, also.

Rant/advise MA interpreting labs and Rx

Scheduled follow up appointment based on bad labs and asked in my chart if I should up my dosage in the meantime.

An MA respond and interpreted my labs as elevated but not too high and okayed my current dosage. It felt weird so I asked who was giving me this advise and if they considered my medical history (my condition means the default ‘normal’ is not to ok).

They responded with their position and said a physician would follow up. Different from the initial your meds are ok and results are within normal.

I’m upset b/c they initially interpreted my labs and advised me on my Rx. In my state (US) this practice outside of a MA license.

For context, whenever my physician responds their messages are tied to their account. I haven’t had abnormal labs commented on by an MA before, especially related to active prescriptions.

I want to report and raise an issue but don’t want anyone to loose their job, especially someone who has access to my medical records and home address.

How should I handle this?

If ordinary toothbrushes are confirmed to be less efficient at removing bacteria than electric toothbrushes, why do some people still choose to use them, only because of the price?

I've noticed some friends and family members still use manual toothbrushes even though electric ones are available. Is there a specific reason for this preference? My dentist says it's only truly necessary for people with disabilities or issues to use manual toothbrushes. Also, information online suggests anyone can benefit from electric ones for a superior clean than a manual one. And brands like Soocas, Waterpik even have electric toothbrushes with water floss which claim remove up to 35x more stains. Anyone who has used this product tell me if it really works? I'm currently receiving dental care for cavities, and I want to prevent getting them again, so I'm wondering if electric toothbrush or brush and floss in one toothbrush could help me with this.

Post acute care/ Skilled nursing facility in the SF BAY AREA CA

Hi! I’m making a post here on behalf of my sister, F29 who has a severe traumatic brain injury that happened at the end of May. She was in ICU for over 50+ days and was even in acute care for while at a local hospital. Right now she is at a long term care facility. She doesn’t have a trachea anymore but she does show symptoms of disorder of consciousness.

My main question here is trying to find a place for her be transferred to. All the post acute care places or skilled nursing home facilities won’t take her because of her age. We just want her to have the care she needs in order for us to be able to take her home essentially. Does anyone know of a place that can take her despite the age, she does have two insurances, one through blue cross/bluebshield and another through medi-cal.

Would this situation be justify to file a complaint?

I'm trying to keep this post somewhat vague, so I apologize in advance.

Family member today had surgery. It is listed in their chart of a specific allergy to a medication (Fentanyl), they even had on the wrist band stating the allergy.

Prior to surgery, they were asked numerous times of any allergy and repeated the allergy. (This is the only allergy in the chart)

During surgery, the anesthesiologist decided that the allergy was more of a sensitivity than an allergy and decided to use it and just monitor any symptoms. (Never discuss this with the patient)

Luckily, no adverse effects occurred. The patient only knew that Fentanyl was used because they overheard a nurse telling another nurse the medication that was received and questioned it. Otherwise, they had no knowledge of it being used.

There are obviously other alternatives to Fentanyl, so it's not like the anesthesiologist had no other options? Plus, it was never discussed prior to surgery? The anesthesiologist's response was basically "Well nothing happened and they're fine so, 🤷‍♀️" and that next time they should use the exact words of "I don't want Fentanyl being used" but as a patient, I would think since it's in the chart with an allergy flag, a wristband is worn, and were asked multiple times prior, that they wouldn't have to say that?

Would you say this is grounds to file a complaint? I'm very close to this family member, so it could just be me overreacting, but to me, this is not okay! It's one thing if it was discussed prior, but what if a severe reaction did occur?? Why go against the flags of a specific allergy listed when there are plenty of alternatives to be used? Would this situation be grounds for a complaint? I'm not trying to get anyone fired or anything, but I feel that that is a pretty important thing to discuss with someone? Or am I just missing something, and that this was well within the anesthesiologist's job? I just want some opinions before going through the whole process.

Healthcare Professionals: What Are the Biggest Challenges You Face Day to Day?

Hi everyone,

I’m a current software engineer interested in creating solutions to make life easier for healthcare professionals. I know the healthcare field can be incredibly demanding, and I’m sure there are some daily frustrations or inefficiencies that technology could help with.

Are there any specific problems, pain points, or recurring challenges you encounter regularly at work—whether it’s related to patient care, administrative tasks, communication, or something else entirely—that you think could be improved?

I’d love to hear your thoughts, no matter how big or small the issue might seem. Thanks in advance for sharing!

Why not simplify the American healthcare system by eliminating surprises? Make it so if you go to a doctor/hospital for any sort of treatment or checkup, they must tell you upfront the total cost of it all. Require insurance providers to list on their websites everything they cover and don't cover.

I keep seeing stories on this subreddit about people going to the hospital/doctor for something, either having no idea that they'd end up getting billed for it due to thinking it would be fully covered by their insurance, or being straight-up lied to and told that the insurance would cover it when it ended up not covering it like what happened here: https://www.reddit.com/r/healthcare/comments/1anqdx8/comment/kpue4c8/

When I have something done, I have no idea what it will cost me or what the insurance will cover. I've been told I would have $0 copay only to get bills months after the fact that I owe hundreds or thousands of dollars.
I've talked to insurance companies about if a specific procedure would be covered. Their answer was that the only way they could tell would be to have the procedure done, submit it, and then see what they decided to cover.

This nonsense is unacceptable. Do other developed countries pull this same degenerate behavior??

People like this poor guy shouldn't have to wait until long after they receive a procedure in order to know if insurance would cover it. It should be as simple as the insurance provider having a complete and immediately-accessible list, on its website, of absolutely everything it would fully cover, absolutely everything it would only partially cover, absolutely everything it wouldn't cover, and exactly how much of what it would partially cover it would cover. Then the doctor or hospital (whichever you visit for your treatment/checkup) would check your insurance card or whatever, go to that insurance provider's website to see how much of that treatment/checkup you're looking for is covered, then immediately let you know from there, upfront, if you're 1) fully covered so you wouldn't have to pay anything out of your own pocket, 2) not covered, so you'd have to pay for all of it out of your own pocket, or 3) partially covered, before telling you how much money of your own pocket you'd need to pay in order to cover the remaining cost your insurance doesn't cover.

In any case, you would know, upfront, of any and all costs you'd have to pay out of your own pocket before the treatment/checkup in question, thus allowing you to avoid stupid surprises and to instead make an informed decision.

There should be a penalty if the doctor or hospital lies or completely misleads you about how much you'd have to pay. In these cases, they should be fully prohibiting from charging or billing you anything if that happens and should be instead required to provide you the treatment/checkup in question for free.

How is someone supposed to get help in America when nothing about the healthcare system works?

I have so many problems and getting basic healthcare is impossible, and this is despite having good insurance. Even getting access to a doctor is impossible when every doctor has waiting lists that take like a year. And I live in San Diego, not some tiny rural area, for people who want to attack me on that.

And even when you do get a doctor, most doctors don’t give a flying fuck too. They are busy trying to get through as many patients as possible, and you have at most 5 minutes to talk to them. Then they push you out and you get slapped with a $500 bill. Even if you have all your deductible paid off, your insurance is run by assholes and don’t give a flying fuck about breaking their own policies so they can steal more of your money.

And when you are sick and frustrated, you can’t escape this system. You need to keep finding a doctor that works for you, but you still have to navigate this broken system. Wasting more money and time. I have literally spent THOUSANDs of dollars on my healthcare when my actual health continues to decline. I fucking hate healthcare

It is so frustrating how no one gives a flying fuck about how broken the healthcare system is. Most people’s experience of seeing a doctor is just seeing them if you have a cut or an infection. They never experienced the hell of being bounced between different doctors when you have a more complex issue.

I’m thinking of potentially getting a new job post graduation and doing more networking with ACHE etc. Any advice on other things that should be added to this list?

Can an X Ray interpretation cost more than 5k?

I did an X Ray on my finger. The facility and doctor that ordered my test are in network. The facility that did the X ray read is in network, but the doctor that actually did the x ray read is out of network, working in the in network facility. How screwed am I? I had 3 images taken of my index finger. Are they likely to take advantage of the fact that insurance won’t cover me and charge me 5k? 10k?

Help! Went to a specialist while I was uninsured without knowing it. What are my options?

TL;DR: Accidentally saw a cardiologist while not covered by insurance, was not informed I was not covered, did not receive an estimate, got a bill for $800. What do?

Context: I turned 26 on September 21st. I had been having heart palpitations following getting the Covid booster and they were freaking me out, so I went to urgent care, then my PCP, who then referred me to a cardiologist. The first two appointments were before my birthday, then the appointment with the cardiologist happened to land on September 23rd. I had read somewhere (and must have misunderstood) that my coverage under my parents' insurance would go through the end of September. I already had my new insurance set up for October 1st so I didn't think there would be a gap in coverage. My visit included an EKG and an echocardiogram. Yesterday, I got a bill for $800. Confused, I call BCBS (old provider), who confirmed that my coverage did in fact end on the 22nd, so I happened to go to a specialist within the 10 day window I wasn't covered out of the entire year.

Question: When I went to the cardiologist's office, I gave the receptionist my BCBS insurance card to get registered in the system. They did not raise any flags that I wasn't covered. I've read a bit about the No Surprises Act as it regards good faith estimates for self-pay customers, but I can't seem to find anything about whether it was the provider's responsibility (legally) to verify my insurance so that I knew I was self-pay. Obviously if I knew I was going to be paying I would have asked for an estimate, and promptly turned my ass around and walked out the door when they said the amount. But as I thought I was covered, and the provider didn't tell me otherwise, I didn't receive an estimate.

Everyone (my mom + BCBS) so far has just told me to try to negotiate with the cardiologist's office, so that's my plan. But I'm not a great negotiator, so I'd love to have some real hard evidence that this mistake was partly their fault (if that is the case), besides just trying to give a sob story and saying it was an accident.

Thoughts?
