Older Spouse Reaches Medicare Eligible Age Before me.

Hello I'm here to ask if anyone knows this situation. I am a younger spouse that's working for the state, my older spouse has been my benefit dependent for years with the same plan. My question is my older spouse reaches medicare age first while I am still employed by the state, can he still be covered by my state-sponsored insurance? Or is it mandatory for him to sign up for medicare, and part way from my coverage?
