[Question - Insurance] Changing Healthcare Plans After Birth Of Child

I'm hoping someone here can help me with this. Please let me know if this is better posted somewhere else!

I have United Healthcare through my job. Currently married with no children. During pregnancy, my husband and I opted for the more expensive Choice Plus plan, to reduce the out of pocket expenses of prenatal care and birth by paying more each paycheck, just in case I experience a medical emergency.

The family plan for this insurance is an INSANE increase. I would rather pay less out of paycheck and more at appointments with how insane the increase is. I would like to downgrade at our child's birth to their other plan (Choice) when we change to the family plan, assuming baby is healthy.

1) can I do this?

2) since adding baby is retroactive to his birth, would this impact the insurance I had during the birthing process/birth/postpartum hospital stay for myself? If so, I think we'd have to eat these costs and wait until open enrollment, otherwise the increase we've been paying isn't really worth it.

Thank you!
