Are HSA’s the new way to discriminate against sick people?
As someone with a chronic illness, I found Obamacare to be a major game changer, since I would have been denied coverage when shopping for health insurance.
However, now I’m selecting benefits at my job and hearing about all the amazing tax savings and employer matches one can get with an HSA, but of course that’s only an option with a high deductible plan.
Me however, with my medication that costs thousands/month, must select the expensive PPO plan, and there’s no HSA associated with that. And of course the premiums/deductible climb every year so you pay more for less coverage
Anyone else feel like this is discriminatory?

I just had the worst personal medical experience at a clinic.
I got to a walk-in clinic near my apartment often, (I live in Markham, Ontario) I have yet to find a family doctor (I want a female one and there’s been no luck for a year I’ve been asking around.)
At this clinic there are three doctors. The wait times aren’t bad. I often see this one doctor who is okay but somewhat dismissive of my issues, especially when it comes to feminine and sexual issues. I spoke to him honestly about the pain I was having during sex, and my bad period cramps. I think I have endometriosis, and I’ve been struggling to get an appointment with a Gyno. Everytime I’ve mentioned this he’s brushed it off - have more foreplay, use more lube, you probably don’t have that, etc. is the kind of reaction I get. But whatever, I just passed it off as a male-doctor-to-female-patient kind of rhetoric.
I asked for a pap smear with a female doctor specifically at the clinic, no problem. I went to the papsmear appointment today to check for a variety of things - cervical cancer, hpv, the usual. I waited an hour. A stranger couple with an appointment ahead of mine mentioned to me that they were going to be late for something else, so I let them do their appointment first, no biggie. I waited another twenty minutes.
This doctor was an older Russian lady who I haven’t met before. She grabbed my hips and pulled me further down on the examination table, half naked, until my ass was practically hanging off the end. If you’ve ever had a papsmear before you know it’s already a pretty uncomfortable situation - half-naked in a cold, public room, with your feet up on these stirrups like you’re a barn animal being inseminated.
She put in the dilator roughly and quickly. I’ve had issues with sex my whole adulthood concerning pain, and having difficulty “opening up” due to past trauma with rape and other psychological issues, maybe physical (if I could see a damn Gyno I’d figure that out.) Anyways, it fucking hurt.
She snapped at me several times (maybe due to the language barrier she didn’t mean to snap, but regardless she came off cold and sharp), and ordered me to relax. A Russian lady yelling at you to relax doesn’t really do the trick. She insisted that if I don’t relax I will get scarring since she could see that my hole was tearing.
I eventually snapped back at her, saying, “I’m trying to relax, okay?! It really hurts.” She then apologized, and made a joke that if I “picture something fun it might not hurt as much.” She laughed after saying that, and I still wonder if she had made a sexual comment joking that I should imagine a penis inside me to help me relax.
After it was done she commented on my amount of discharge, saying I might have a yeast infection. I asked her if that was possible due to soap I use to clean that area, she shrugged her shoulders and said she doesn’t know. She left quickly, not bothering to speak with me anymore beyond “we’ll phone you with any results.” I looked at the samples on the table, and the blood inside the tubes, and realized I was bleeding down below.
I am done with Canadian health care. I am done with women’s health issues being disregarded. I am done with the astonishing lack of proper sexual care in this country.
Moved from Europe & so lost in US healthcare
TLDR: Loved Kaiser, switched to Carefirst, losing my goddamn mind. Is there anything that I can do to get a similar experience to Kaiser - large reliable centralized care provider?
If anyone has the patience, please help me understand why Carefirst BC/BS is supposedly the best and Kaiser Permanente is apparently the worst.
When I first moved here from a country with universal healthcare, I got a Kaiser plan off the health insurance marketplace. It was incredibly affordable (silver plan), the clinics were large and well equipped, the online portal and mobile app worked fine & the member services were 24/7. Contrary to the stereotype, while I'm sure my PCP was overworked, I actually felt very well taken care of and remembered. Like, all the complaints I had previously heard about US healthcare made no sense to me, it was Good Enough.
Got a new job. Carefirst BC/BS Gold HMO. Chose it because the benefits resembled my Kaiser plan - no deductible, reasonable copays. Employer covers 80% of premium anyways. Nice.
I go to choose a PCP. It's all these tiny family practices located above a liquor store or nail salon. I'm panicking. I want to be able to go in and get all my tests, visits and prescriptions in one place! Instead I gotta pay extra facility fees and go to a nearby hospital or urgent care for tests/x-rays. For the love of god, how is this preferable for the majority of the US population?
(I have some understanding of the American culture of going to a 'family doctor' that's been your doctor for 20 years, perhaps there is a stronger relationship and level of trust. It doesn't outweigh the level of inconvenience for me.)
I have no way to go back to Kaiser, Carefirst is my employer's only plan and I can't afford Kaiser on an individual plan. Are there any clinic networks that have at least some vibe of a professional facility? Perhaps you know some in MD/VA/DC?

Why don’t states threaten to revoke the certificates of need for hospitals that shutter their obstetrics departments?
I’m seeing hospitals in rural areas shutter their obstetrics/maternity departments because they are unprofitable. Why don’t states force them to remain open as a condition of the hospital maintaining its license?
