Bill for Being Wrongly Told I was In Network

Hi! About a year ago I had my wisdom teeth removed. I was told by the Orthodontist office I got referred to that my plan was in-network, only to receive a bill 9 months later for an extra $500 on top of what I already paid! After speaking with my insurance provider and with the orthodontist's office, I found out that my plan is actually out of network. Do I have to pay this bill even though they wrongly told me I was in-network?? And if so, do I have any legal protection to mitigate the bill? I think they already wrote off about $1,700 but this still doesn't seem fair at all.
