Intra-articular PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections are a new treatment for musculoskeletal pain and are not yet covered by most insurances. When you elect to get this treatment, it’s understood that you will pay cash.
I went to Swedish, one of the huge, well-known medical groups in the Seattle area. They are doing PRP at relatively low cost. I had a procedure there 3 years ago at a cost of $861 out of pocket. I decided to get another one recently, and again, they quoted the same price of $861, to be paid up front at the time of service . I paid the fee and got the procedure.
The next day, they send me a bill for an additional $395.00. The bill states that the $861.00 was a “pre-payment.”
These bastards told me the cost would be $861.00, NOT $1296.00. I have no problem paying for the service, but they lied to me about the cost. This is not a typical insurance transaction where the costs are not known up front until all the insurance processes have taken place. This is a self-pay procedure where they quote a price and you either agree to it or you don’t. I have not called their billing dept yet because they are closed for the weekend. I suppose it could be a mistake, but I don’t think so. I think they lied to me.
Do I have any recourse? I will pay the bill because I don’t want it to go to collections and hit my credit, but I will never use Swedish again for anything, and will leave a negative review on every platform I can think of if they don’t remove this undisclosed charge.
