Im researching medical interpreters and issues ESL patients in face in the American medical system for a project currently. I've done some interviews with people in my area about the difficulty in getting a medical interpreter, cultural misunderstandings when talking to doctors about diet, as well as the strain it can put on children who have to make appointments, deal with insurance, and translate at the doctor's office for older immigrant family members. I was wondering what patients and healthcare workers struggle with when dealing with a language/cultural barrier, what they do to deal with this issue, and how big of a problem is it really.
