Checked into the hospital a few hours before NYE. Discharged on 1/2. Hospital is billing both years, making our family pay two deductibles. Is this normal?

We’ve contacted insurance and the hospital and asked them to consolidate the bills to one calendar year, but they’re saying there’s nothing they can do. I would really hate to pay the deductible + coinsurance twice for one medical event. Is there anything I can do? This is in California.
