Why do doctors (psychiatrists) force someone to see them every single month for a medication theyre going to be on for the rest of their life?

Doctors force patients to see them once a month for medications theyre going to be on for the rest of their life. If you miss or are late to an appointment, you dont get your medication & you either have no medication and get withdrawals or….yeah pretty much what happens. Is this how all doctors/psychiatrists work?
