Question regarding how Dental services are provided. Are the patients not given options? Is it ok to ask? I did not for the fear of sounding cheap.

Hi i just had a crown put on my tooth for a crack. While everything went fine I was surprised why I was not provided any option by my dentist regarding two things - the type of the crown and how the crown will be put. Basically I was given a porceilen crown which is the most costly. I asked about the kind of crown and the dentist said its the best. I did not say anything. It felt really embarrassing to say that I want to save some money by opting for a metal crown. Also the crown was made immediately in the Doctor's office. That resulted in an additional 150$ charge. I would have been happy to come back next day or after a few days to get my crown. Again, I was not provided this option. Is this how generally dentistry practices are? I understand I did not pay a lot according to overall dentistry care charges but still 200$ is 200$ and I could have saved it had I been given the options.
