Back in early Feb I was emergency helicoptered (ambulance refused to pick me up) from a snowboarding incident for a concussion to be treated at a hospital. I got scanned and had some blood work done, and was released within a few hours of me being at the hospital.
I didn't have insurance.
Scared for a life enslaving medical bill, I did some research and see that I may qualify for Medi-cal which would would retroactively pay for me and applied. I've also noticed the Charity Care Program which I may also qualify for. But I know little to nothing about either of these in regards to my bill and situation.
I recently received a letter from the hospital (or bill company working for them) saying that I was eligible for Medicaid but they denied payment (probably since I haven't applied at the point yet). The letter asks from me to provide a primary insurance provider if I have one.
Talking to some friends in the Health industry, they mentioned something about assumptive medi-cal or a MC382 form to expedite my medi-cal application. They recommended me call the hospital's financial counselor and ask about these things.
I've called about 5-6 different phone numbers to no avail. Mostly admins transferring me from one spot to another only to get a voice machine or "ask this department". So I'm currently stuck in an anxious limbo not knowing what to do or if I will be okay, and could use some insight and advice for my situation.
Thanks!
Edit:
Before the beginning of 2022 I was making $14.50 an hour until this year where CA min wage was bumped to $15. In the next couple weeks, due to Union Negotiations, I may be getting a pay raise to $16 an hour OR I may be unemployed due to being on strike. I work in a seasonal location so hours vary greatly between 20-60 hrs a week. I myself work between 30-40hrs.
