Volunteering Costs

I don't know if this is the right subreddit for this but I wanted to ask/rant about this. Basically I want to start volunteering at a hospital and I've finished all my paperwork and tests and its cost me more than 250 dollars and I'm kinda annoyed to be honest. I'm not wealthy I'm literally a part time worker and full time student. Just kind of frustrated that even if I want to volunteer it costs so much and I also wanted to ask if any of you have any similar experiences and how much it cost you guys? Based in Ontario by the way
