In the US, there is obviously this never-ending battle to get hospitals and other healthcare providers to be transparent about their pricing. (My personal opinion is that they could do it if they wanted to, but they never will.) I thought that this NPR article was interesting; it describes a rule that seems to be the latest shot fired.
That made me wonder: Are there any sources that have rated or evaluated the degree of price transparency practiced by different healthcare providers in the US?
I'm thinking of maybe academics, advocacy groups, or trade groups. Basically my goal is to look for my own healthcare providers, find out on what dimensions they are supposed to be good/bad, and then (if I agree) contact them with my praise/blame.
I'm sure that many of you out there think it's futile to try to find the real price of any health service. That may be true, but I still think that there are certain practices that I want to encourage my health system to adopt, because they could be a step on the road to greater transparency.
