With all that's wrong with healthcare in the U.S., I just wanted to tell you all about this deal I found. I needed to see a doctor because my lymph nodes were swollen, I had some pain and was concerned. I searched for urgent cares near me and I found this place. It's a pretty typical urgent care, but here's where it gets really cool:
After they looked at me, did a couple tests and wrote a prescription, I went to the front and the lady said "That'll be $359 for today." I shrugged and prepared to pay (still 1/3 of what it would have been at the ER, right?), and she hits me with this:
They have a membership program where I can pay $161 today, and that covers the cost of today's visit plus 3 months of membership. Membership is $39/month after that. Once you're a member any office visit is $39. That's for running tests, xrays, physicals, vaccines, and a bunch of other stuff. Here's the pamphlet: https://imgur.com/a/f7qEKvL
So basically instead of paying $359 for one a-la-carte office visit with tests, I got that same visit plus 3 months of membership for less than half that. And if I need to go back, it'll cost me $39.
I just wanted to share this story because I see so many posts complaining about the extortion racket that is big healthcare in this country, and I want people to know that these sorts of entities do exist for people who want to pay reasonable prices for their healthcare. You just have to look and maybe call around a little.
The drawback of something like this is that it isn't going to cover big things that they can't do, like major surgeries, expensive equipment (CT scans, MRIs, etc.), or other big ticket treatments. It won't help you if you get cancer or wreck your car and need a proper hospital. It also doesn't cover the cost of whatever drugs or medical equipment you may need. But if you're relatively healthy and want to be covered in case you need basic medical services, this might be something you're interested in.
