Delaying ACA enrollment for extended trip abroad?

I have had health insurance via an ACA marketplace for the past few years. From January I will being traveling to another country for 6 months before returning. During my stay abroad, I will have health coverage from the health system in that country. I was hoping to delay enrolling for health care in the USA until after I return, but it's not clear to me whether that I will qualify for an SEP (special enrollment period) given that I'm not changing my residency. Does anyone know for sure?

Let's have conversations about health insurance

In light of recent news, my girlfriend (nurse) and I started having conversations about our broken healthcare insurance industry. She told me about a time when she was a new grad nurse, insurance denied life saving medication to one of her clients, and she and other staff had to fight for her patient's right to healthcare. Seeing her frustration really moved me, and I wondered how many other stories like this are out there. 

Health insurance practices are clearly unethical and change needs to happen. I don't know what this change will look like, but I think positive change starts with stories. It's time we share these stories and spark change. My goal is to bring awareness to this issue. Maybe one day these stories may reach policy makers or those in position to make change. 

I invite healthcare workers to share their stories. I'm working on setting up a blog to publish these stories. You can choose to publish anonymously. Please feel free to share this to co-workers, friends, and family.
