In northern California, is there any job protecting medical leave for employee who does not qualify for FMLA?

I have worked for this company in sillicon valley for 6 month. I am needing a joint surgery now. I think i don't qualify for FMLA leave since I have not been with the company for more than 12 months. Are there any other type of leaves I can take which is job-protecting?
