Ambulance payment - non insured?

Help - I had a brief fainting episode in public and someone panicked + called 911. I had a prompt recovery and full consciousness in 60 seconds, and I told the ambulance folks that I do not have insurance coverage. They would not listen and took me to an ER. How best to address / contest a $5000 ambulance bill incurred ... (PS - the ER bills has yet to arrive...)
