I am currently in the VA and I am considering getting additional private insurance coverage with Aetna through my employer.
My question is, if I use the VA for primary care but don’t want to be limited to their surgeons. Would Aetna consider their referrals as valid and cover any surgeon I want to see (out of network cost). Or would I have to go to an outside doctor or specialist to go to an outside surgeon?
Example. VA doctor suggests I need a shoulder surgery, specialist confirms, i use this as a valid referral to go to a specialist outside of the VA system and Aetna covers?
