Let me start out by saying that I am American. I've certainly contributed to a few GoFundMe's, but I guess I've been lucky enough that no one I'm especially close to has been in this situation where I could ask them this question ...
Using a GoFundMe to pay for the cost of cancer treatment seems so prevalent these days. I see people doing it that I just know must have health insurance. Health insurance confuses me, but as I understand it, once you reach your "out of pocket maximum" for the year ($8,000, for arguments sake), all your medical costs past that are 100% covered. Is that wrong? If I had an OOPM of $8k, wouldn't the maximum I would need to pay, per year, for cancer treatment be $8,000? Yet I see people needing to raise $50k for their treatment.
I'm not passing judgement or casting aspersions, certainly. I just want to know what I'm missing. Many of us will get cancer if we live long enough ... How does one avoid ending up in the situation where you're crowdfunding to pay for healthcare? Do you just have to have a ton of money?
