Hello, I was hoping I could get some advice here because I have no idea who to even ask about this situation. I've recently moved and gotten a new PCP. Initially I went for stomach problems, but we've also decided to tackle my mental health (mood disorders, weight, possible ADD as I re-enter school in my 30's). Anyhow, I have been successfully taking one medication for depression/depressive episodes for a few years now. He wanted to add a med from a class I knew didn't work for me, but I tried it to appease the doctor I guess. Med doesn't work, so he suggests another one from a different but similar class. About two weeks into this one, it's meh and has a few weird side effects. I try to discuss this with them, but the providers solution is to cut down on medication that I know works and stay with the new med same dose. Meanwhile I have been feeling more tired/depressed and I really don't like this solution. The provider has promised that of things go south, we will just bring the dose back up. My fear is that I can't afford for things to go more south right now and it sounds like he wants me to either get off this med for another or try adding another SSRI. So my question is, is it acceptable to tell a doctor that you would prefer to not take anything in that class and just stick with the med you have that you know works? I do believe that I could benefit from another medication possibly, but not from this class. However, I am a people pleaser, I do like this provider and I don't want to seem like someone just trying to get more drugs. I just don't want to feel like im being pressured to get off/decrease one med in favor of one I know doesn't work even when combined with my current med and I'm afraid of slipping back into the dark place I was before I found this med.
TL;DR is it acceptable to tell a doctor you don't want to take a certain kind of med and that you're happy with your current med/dose?
