Okay I need help. Has anyone ever dealt with something like this? My grandma (88) broke her arm and has to have surgery because the bone shifted. We've been caring for her 24/7 3 kids (late fifties) and 1 grandkid (30s) alternating shifts. She can't have shoulder surgery until she receives a pacemaker. She gets the pacemaker tomorrow. We’ve been told she’ll be sent home directly after. They're saying she can't move her arm for seven days. That means she's armless on both sides. We asked for her to be referred for the days she isn’t allowed arm use (might dislodge pacemaker). The Veterans Aide and assistance person also advised two people because she’s a bigger lady and needs help getting up and down. Again there’s only four of us and we have to sleep and work jobs at some point. The nurses all tried to help us talk to the doctor and get help but the doctor refused to put her in rehab because they say there is nothing to rehab. I can understand that but this feels like a liability to send her home with no help or care because she has no arms for a week. We are going to need to care for her the following week(s) and we're being told to use bed pans and all this stuff we've never used obviously. We were also basically told if we couldn't deal with it then put her in a nursing home. Thing is though. She's not in need of a nursing home I don’t think. Her mind is clear just… she's just disabled for a couple weeks due to her arms. Have you ever dealt with this? Am I crazy? Is there really nothing we can do if the doctor won't refer her to rehab ? Obviously the big issue we can t afford the thousands it will cost for her to be in there for a few days if we can’t get referred. And if she doesn’t we’re very afraid she may hurt herself self again before the surgery by being stubborn (refusing help, getting up when we’re in another room, wanting to potty by herself - which again I get but it’s not ALLOWED). We're trying to talk to a social worker tomorrow during surgery but we're just dumbfounded. Also the social worker has not answered or called us back since we were given their details. I don’t know if that’s normal or not. It's nearly impossible for us to get help and with school starting (one in school, others are teachers) she won't have anymore at home soon. Ideas? Advice? Have you dealt with this before? Thank you in advance ❤️ For reference she has VA&A, Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare. She gets a lady two days a week who helps her through VAA but apparently we can’t use Medicare with a referral to rehab. And if you know more about any of this or the system please do tell. We know very little. We just want our grandma healthy, safe and healing.
