Why is it so difficult to confirm provider coverage?

I’ve got a job offer with a company that has Blue Cross Blue Shield Illinois. I live in a major Wisconsin city. My healthcare provider group is associated with a major University and for my purposes currently, everything is considered in network as long as I’m at one of their clinics, regardless of doctor.

In talking with the insurance provider for the potential employer, they’ve confirmed coverage of some of my specific doctors by NPI, but others they say are out of network, even though the are in the under the same provider group as the ones they said were.

In talking with the billing department for the provider group, they said if one doctor is covered all doctors would be covered because they do all or none contracts. Obviously this is in direct contrast with what the insurance said.

Now when I asked the insurance for the coverage of the provider group by their NPI, they indicated the provider group is in network but, again, contrasts statements that some doctors under the provider group are not covered. Further, even though the provider group is in network, my specific clinic address was listed as out of network.

Is there any way to confirm coverage without actually enrolling first? I keep getting contradictory information and am not in a place to switch medical providers at this time?
