As an American, I know our system is messed up. With that said, it kind of irks me when other countries tout their free or extremely low cost systems. The reason it irks me is because of how much money and effort the US puts into developing innovative treatments, drugs, and medical devices. The few, dated, articles I could find on drug development by country said the US develops around 40%-50% of the drugs that go to market each year. It really sucks having to pay exorbitant amounts for our healthcare, but it really sucks having to hear about how awful our system is while they're using our research. I know this is a selfish way to look at this issue because the US does help underdeveloped countries reach a level of basic care through those developments, but what would happen if the US put in stricter laws surrounding intellectual property and forced other first world countries to pay for the research and development the US produces?
*NOTE: I don't work in healthcare and I have zero clue how insurance in the US actually works*
