My girlfriend has narcolepsy w/ severe cataplexy. She has been officially diagnosed, she's run the guantlet of sleep studies and tried multiple prescribed medications that all of which don't really work. The most directly helpful has been Adderall but it's so goddamn impossible to find now, doctors are prescribing Ritalin as a replacement. What she really needs though is Xyrem but doctors aren't prescribing it purely because they want to avoid te cost because she's uninsured because her narcolepsy won't let her hold down a job! She can barely function on any regular schedule.
I am not asking for personal medical advice, I am asking how is anyone supposed to afford Xyrem - a life-saving effective treatment for narcolepsy according to the FDA - at over $6000 per 180 mL when the disease it helps cure is directly preventing the flow of financial income?
This is tearing her apart, every day we wait for a day some greedy pharmaceutical company decides to not charge a small salary for life-saving medication. There's a real argument to be made about whether a life is worth living of they can just never afford the medicine that enables them to live a normal life. We are really struggling here.
Has anyone had any experience being able to get this price reduced without employer-provided insurance?
