How does OxyContin work?

Hi, I am a business student doing research on the opioid epidemic, but I am having trouble (surprisingly) trying to find a difference between OxyContin and generic opioids. As far as I could tell, OxyContin is a controlled-release pill while the generics are usually not. What does this mean, and is it possible to explain it in the simplest way possible? Thank you!
