How do I get health insurance?

Hello r/healthcare. Found myself in a bit of a pickle trying to get health insurance in the US and wondering if anyone here has helpful input on what I can do, if anything.

I’m a freelancer / gig worker that is the sole owner of an LLC taxed as an s-corp making around $60k gross right now. I’m not currently on payroll for the LLC but have been considering setting it up in the future.

I have been experiencing some health issues recently that I think are related to COVID, but unclear, and ultimately boils down to numbness in some extremities and the possibility of some neurological issue. Don’t have more info at this time.

I have been a ‘full time traveler’ for the last 3 years living on a sailboat and picking up gigs when I can. I currently have a PMB in South Dakota as my primary residence / address and have used that for three years now since traveling.

I currently have a 6 month short term health insurance plan that is non ACA compliant that is going to expire in early March. I started seeing some specialists when my health issues started but I’m at an an inflection point where the doctors I’m seeing keep referring me to other people and recommending more tests and I’m pretty confident this is going to turn into quite a few Drs Appts over the next 6-9 mo to figure out what’s going on, hopefully get good treatment, and make sure I’m covered if this turns into something larger. The out of pocket expenses on this plan have already become a point of financial stress this year.

Open enrollment is over and I missed the deadline. I have been told by a broker that even if I had a qualifying life event - such as moving - I would not qualify for any plan because I did not previously (or currently) have an ACA compliant plan in place. They are saying this will be true even for off exchange ACA compliant plans.

After my conversation with him and the other research I’ve been trying to do it sounds like I am categorically disqualified to get health insurance at this time in the US.

Maybe there are non ACA plans available off exchange but I would hate to have to go through getting booted or not accepted if I’m considered to have a pre existing condition (which I’m not sure I would or not I’ve just been seeing docs to try and figure this out).

Is there any hope of me finding a good health insurance plan in the US even if it involves me moving and establishing a residence?

Should I look outside the US to try and get the care I need sooner and hopefully is a cost effective manner as long as it’s quality care?

Any help appreciated. Thanks.
