A few months ago my boyfriend (uninsured) went to the ER with severe stomach pains.
By the time the doctor saw him, the pain had passed. We didn't know at the time but we can be almost assured now that it was most likely just stomach ulcers, and that was his first experience with them.
At the ER they quickly saw him and told him to see his primary care doctor (he informed the doctor he didn't have one since he wasn't insured), and then they let him go. He didn't receive any actual treatment or medication, he wasn't tested for anything, and he barely even got examined. We deduced from Google that it was probably stomach ulcers, the doctor didn't even offer that idea to us. They didn't give us any possible explanation for the pain, just said to see his primary care doctor.
The bill he received was $900! Which, for the treatment he got, just seemed insane. I told him that one trick we all learned, to ask for an itemized bill. What he got back was an increased bill of $1100, and at that point I was livid.
We cannot pay this bill, nor do we want to. How does that visit warrant $1100? I want to know the next steps to disputing this and Google is giving all kinds of advise but I don't know what to actually listen to, especially since in this case he was uninsured.
He did apply for state healthcare after this (I don't remember what it's called, MediCal or something, since this is in CA) and he was denied. I have no idea why, he makes like the bare minimum someone can live on in this state.
Any grounded advice is helpful, thank you.
