Medical records must legally be kept for a certain length of time, but is there a legal cap to how long they can be kept?

After a patient has no longer been seen at a practice for a period of many years, is there any sort of law or guideline saying that medical records must be destroyed? If the practice doesn't bother destroying them after the legal period is up, are they just kept indefinitely?
