29 y/o male in US, with health/financial anxiety and OCD. In treatment and finally making progress on that. But I’ve had chronic back pain on and off for a good 5+ years. Had an X-ray years ago and it flared up recently so got an MRI. Showed minor herniation and and bulge in two discs. Decide to get it checked at orthopedist with a non operative doctor per my PCP recommendation to make sure I’m good to keep doing PT and there’s no serious pathology.
Unbeknownst to me, I’m told at check in to go to the X-ray department. I questioned it saying I didn’t expect that and the costs that come with it. They made it sound like it wasn’t an option. I could’ve walked out but then I figured I’d have to pay a cancellation fee. So I go along with it. Even though I’ve had an MRI elsewhere so it seems redundant. The doctor was great but I’m furious afterwards now that I’ll be billed for X-rays I didn’t need in addition to a specialist visit. I have a HDHP so I’m thinking this is a $500+ visit. I’m happy there’s nothing serious, but this is a real blow to my psyche considering my health and financial anxiety issues. I feel worse now waiting to see how much they’re going to charge.
Any advice or stories to make me feel better about this? Maybe I can contest the charges?
Edit to add: this was at Rothman Institute in Pennsylvania and I have UHC Navigate
