Schizophrenia Mother & Long-term Care Options

Hi guys, my GF and I are having a dilemma.

Her mom developed Schizophrenia awhile ago and has never been the same since then. My GF moved down to SoCal with me a few years ago so her sister is currently living with the mom in NorCal. The building they're living in is currently owned by their uncle who is currently waiving rent for the mom (due to family reasons), but deep down I know he needs the money since he just started a family, new house etc.

They've been taking care of their mom ever since they were kids ever since she developed this condition and now we're hitting our 30's and in all honesty, it's becoming a burden. We don't want to abandon her, but considering our financial situation we need another solution that's more long term. The mom has been through countless therapy/treatment with no success so we're not sure what to do.

The sister/GF thought about splitting rent for the mom but considering how much the rent would be, it's not something they can do forever.

Would anyone know of any government assistant programs that can help her mom maybe get into a retirement home for people with these kind of conditions? Idk if it helps, but my GF is currently an RN. It doesn't help that she breaks/throws things away or causes issues with the neighbors. TIA.
