Me and my husband (25 and 27) are trying to figure out a solution for health insurance. Currently he is uninsured and I have Medicaid due to being a former foster kid, but that expires in October on my 26th birthday, at that time I will also become uninsured. I’m also pregnant with our first child, due around Christmas.
We started a business about 3 years ago, and although it has stayed alive and been relatively successful, almost every penny we’ve ‘earned’ as ‘profit’ has had to go back into the business to keep it alive and help it grow. At this rate we will be in a much better spot in 5 years or so (we have no intention of or desire to stop the business) but we have to keep our business alive to get there. It is our only source of income, we have no insurance opportunities through any other job (since we don’t have other jobs), and we don’t have insurance through our business since we have no employees. We are estimated to make 105k this year which is just above the 400% poverty level for a family of 3 (92k).
From what I understand, there are NO government programs (We live in KY) that help those that fall above the 400% poverty level, and we fall right above it. So we don’t qualify for anything and we don’t make enough to afford insurance. Does anyone know of anything we can do? I’m going to be uninsured for the rest of my pregnancy and the birth and I’m afraid of what that will do to us financially. Any advice helps.
*I do not wish to disclose what line of business we are in, please don’t ask.
