What to do about waitlists?

This is somewhat personal because I am facing my own barriers to access to care, but the answers would almost certainly help me support my clients and loved ones and I am sure that is true for many of us.

Waitlists in the US have always been a thing. But they have exploded in the wake of the pandemic - neurology is average 249.2 days for a standard referral according to some sources (I would link but most of the relevant stats are per hospital, not nationwide.) Even emergent care can be waiting 90 days or more in some cases.

Even some general practitioners have long waitlists - I am currently waitlisted to see my GP, where I have been a patient for 5 years.

While these facts do make a major critique of socialized medicine (the wait times) a bit of a head scratcher, are there any practical things we can do on the ground about it? Are there community resources that can be developed?

This also reveals an enormous strain on our already strained health care system. In my personal life, like public school teachers, nurses are almost all looking for a new career. So creating some supports so the health care system doesn’t get more strained seems like a good idea.
