What can I do to change the horrible hospital food in America that is killing our patients?

My family is from Caribbean descent and we live in Florida. I would say we eat a pretty wholefood diet- but not the Western American diet. We don’t eat pancakes and bacon for breakfast. We don’t drink Pepsi or Sprite with our food. These are things these hospitals are trying to feed people and we are accepting this everyday that passes and don’t do something about it.

The biggest disappointment my family has come across is having to watch my 86 year old grandma starve in American hospitals because of the lack of healthful food. Nothing can be catered specifically to one patient- it is all mass prepared in a kitchen somewhere in the hospital supplied by large companies. The food is set and all you do is choose from the selection they have for that specific day. You can’t ask for white rice and beans if it’s Tuesday and that selection is for Thursday.

My grandma not only does not eat anything a Standard Western diet follows, but she is also on a low sodium, high blood pressure cardiac diet- meaning her options are reduced by half- and yet, they still offer her salty mashed potatoes or chicken soup, cold tuna sandwiches on white bread, soda, and for breakfast grits with sausage links. With a side of saltine crackers and butter. She can’t and also won’t eat any of this, so they’ve started tube feeding her again.

Enough is enough. The doctors have no say on what the hospital provides for food to the patients, so how does anyone expect people to get better? The menu on 2 different hospitals we have visited (have the same food supplier) offers Carolina BBQ ribs, Mac and cheese, they are sponsored by Kelloggs sugary cereals, PepsiCo, I mean the list goes on and on of food sick people should not be eating and won’t recover from. It looks like a menu from Chilis and IHOP. Both hospitals have numerous vending machines of sugary sodas, candies, and processed chips or granola bars.

Tell this to the food service staff and they can’t do anything either because that’s just the company the hospitals are connected with.

So, What can I do? I have had enough. My grandma is deteriorating more and more each day, without proper nutrition, this has sparked a rage in me where I want to be proactive. I just don’t know where to start. We can’t keep feeding the sick and vulnerable literal garbage. With these food options people are going to continue to stay sick.
