I’m a dispatcher for a patient transport department. Today they moved the dispatch location to a radiology patient holding area.
They fired the woman who worked in the holding area and put our dispatch station in radiology holding, and now we are performing their duties on top of our own.
The duties of the person in holding was responsible for watching over the patients, keeping logs of ER patients who go for tests, calling the proper testing areas when the patient has been brought to the holding room, and bringing patients to the bathroom/offering them blankets when they are cold.
This is on top of our regular duties, which are hard enough. There’s no way we can take care of patients and keep track of a bunch of ER patients in addition to our normal duty as the phone is always ringing off the hook with people scheduling in-patients to go to procedures.
Dispatching the calls to transporters in an efficient manner can be tricky enough when it’s busy and I’m juggling phone calls, lunch breaks, and moving beds throughout the hospital.
Upper management made this change without asking for feedback. They did it in order to save money because the hospital has been losing a lot of money and had to cut costs.
Myself and the other dispatchers are all in agreement that it’s pretty much impossible to effectively keep track of everything that’s going on.
This has gotta be some kind of safety violation, right? We barely have time to check on the patients. If they run out of O2 or start vomiting, having a seizure, or worse we may not notice right away.
If we do notice and call a rapid, I will have to leave the in-patient transports unattended and it backs everything up and every department goes into an outrage.
We have keep keeping an email log of all the issues and sending it to our boss. Anything else we can do?
