The only way to effectively reform the US healthcare system is to change who is in charge of the system. If economists run our banking system and lawyers run our legal system, why can’t doctors and patients run our healthcare system (instead of politicians & insurance companies)? Shouldn’t this be the aim of healthcare SYSTEM reform (instead of just health insurance reform)?
The only way to put patients and doctors in charge of the US healthcare system is to reform the entire system from the top down. EMBRACE (an acronym for Expanding Medical and Behavioral Resources with Access to Care for Everyone) is the only US healthcare reform proposal that does this.
EMBRACE is a comprehensive proposal with three principle innovations:
- The creation of an independent "National Medical Board" based on the Federal Reserve to put doctors and patients in charge of the system and insulate them from undue financial (i.e., insurance and drug companies) and political influence.
- A universal, evidence-based benefit (insurance) system based on "traditional" Medicare/Medigap offering universal coverage and access to basic healthcare services.
- The creation of a common (i.e., single) web-based electronic platform for all medical data, under the oversight of the "National Medical Board," to assure interoperability and universal access to medical records (among many other advantages).
