Smoking with Kidney Disease

Hi all. I was looking for advise regarding a situation regarding my father. He is in hospital right now and has hemodialysis now after suffering from kidney disease for many years and recently being admitted to ICU due to having issues with his breathing in addition to ongoing issues with his kidneys (now he is in a ward).

He has been smoking nearly his whole life and used to smoke 6+ a day and the past few years only has a max of 3 a day.

Since being in the hospital he has been advised to not smoke but we have been told he can if he would like.

He got a nicotine patch attached to him to help reduce to appetite to smoke but anytime we go to visit him he always asks for cigarettes and responds upset and in anger when we tell him we have brought him any.

We took him a cigarette today when we went to visit him and his tone all changed and he seemed more happy and engaging.

So I do not know what to do know. Obviously I do not want him to smoke at all as it can affect his health and more so now after recent health scares. However, seeing how he changes when he does I do not know if we should continue to bring a him a cigarette or two a day when we come to visit. He will smoke when he is out of hospital anyways so is it really a big deal if he continues now because there is no way we can stop him smoking forever.

Any advise is appreciated. TIA.
