can someone help explain deductibles and out-of-pocket costs?

so my work is providing healthcare coverage, it's saying my deductible is $1500 with a max out of pocket is $3000.. can someone help explain to me what a deductible is? I understand that it's how much you'd pay before insurance covers it, but what if i dont have $1500 on standby? does insurance not cover it because i cant pay my deductible?
ps. im 18 and am new to healthcare coverages
