[discussion] The futility of VA healthcare

So I'm watching this preview of Jon Stewart's new show. And the first topic is VA healthcare. Specifically how soldiers get exposed to toxic chemicals from burn pits, return home, get discharged from service. Then develop cancer and other complications years later, after they no longer qualify for medical treatment.

But the part that gets me is that all the struggle isn't about treatment. Its about qualifying for treatment then paying for treatment because you don't qualify. Because the DoD behaves like an employer looking to make ex employees healthcare into someone else's problem. Because like the rest of us, the DoD is part of a society that does't just accept that everyone should receive whatever treatment they need.

So instead of spending our energy - including the air time of this show - dealing with the disease. How to treat it and how to prevent it. We spend our energy trying to either prevent qualifying for care or hoping we don't die before we do.
