Hi all!
USA, Texas here. My income is rather limited due to medical issues, and I am uninsured. I have access to a local clinic here that works on a sliding scale, and my visits are affordable ($10-$20) payments.
However, they are fully unwilling to provide some of the care I need. Even worse, I live in a area with a 30% vaccination rate, all medical services full, and said clinic has some serious superspreader vibes going on right now. Also please note this is the only medical service in my area beyond a ER @ 110% capacity, and I am not suffering any kind of emergency or crisis or anything needing a ER visit.
So, here's my list of problems and why I am a mess, in random order:
Problems:
- I suffer from alcohol abuse disorder (diagnosed). Have been recovering for a while, and doing much better - due to finding a care provider that will take patients for 'The Sinclair Method'. Everything is going quite well, I have been on this drug (Naltrexone) for some time with no ill effects, however the clinic is unwilling to prescribe it (think a doctor so clueless she had never heard of the drug, and then got confused and thought I was asking for methadone or some kind of drug with any potential for abuse and got all weird) and my only other solution to that is $99 follow ups with the original telehealth provider. I can't keep paying that every single month for a medication that costs me far less and works fine. Even offered to e-mail a handy NISH link to her on the drug, it's uses, and was met with some weird attitude that makes me think they just somehow thought I was 'drug seeking'.
- I am a trans woman taking IM estrogen (Via a doctor and a proper prescription.) The same problem is here - I've been on this drug for quite some time, am having no ill effects, local clinic refuses to accept or continue treatment (very conservative town, my husband also tried to get care for himself for this here and was greeted with nothing but hostility) - and my only solution is again expensive 'follow up visits' with telehealth providers that I cannot afford. The drugs are cheap and generic, getting anyone I can afford to simply allow me to have them is not.
- I am diagnosed with GAD and depression, and take 20mg generic lexapro for this daily. Works like a charm, improves my life. Local clinic is unwilling to continue my prescription as my doctor does 'not believe in antidepressants' and recommends I go to church.
- Frankly? My mental health is trash right now. Between the pandemic, this shoddy level of local care, recovering from alcoholism, a nasty skin disorder due to a autoimmune issue, coming out to my family and everyone else as trans - it's mostly broken me. I don't want to be outside very much right now, and I need my safe space inside.
Is anyone aware of any options I have? These medications are generic, and affordable to me - and I have been on them for quite some time. Nether is a scheduled substance, or has any potential for abuse. I had recent blood work done, as well as a general physical showing that I am doing just fine and that any concerns for either of these drugs is a non issue.
Is there some kind of telehealth option out there that works on a sliding scale and can work with someone simply wanting to continue the meds they need to live a normal life?
Some kind of doctor that does some pro-bono like work, can just look up my medical files and allow me to continue my meds without having to choose between them and paying the bills and keeping the lights on?
There must be something better than gofundme, it really can't be this bad.
