[Question - Insurance] Dad had a stroke no insurance and just shy of medicare...

He has been in the ICU for 4 days and will most likely stay until Sunday and then go to the Neurology ICU for another week. They want him to do inpatient therapy for a minimum 4 weeks then outpatient thereafter.

He is just shy of Medicare by 6 months but does not qualify right now due to both him and my mom have/make too much money.

Both are on SSI with no other source of income. In the process of applying for financial assistance through the hospital and waiting on word if they qualify.

If I understand correctly the hospitals have to provide care for both inpatient and outpatient therapy whether or not they have the means to pay for it?

Would having insurance have a determining factor on the length of time he spends in therapy even if we have no means to make the payments for it?

Would he be able to get a private insurance (blue cross, etc..) right now if there is no financial aid available to help cover the therapy in/outpatient so insure he gets the best care we can get him?

I thank anyone who can give me some insight as it would be my dad I ask these questions to but I'd rather not stress him out he needs to focus on getting better.
