[Question - Other] Gross Ineptitude or Discrimination?

I’m really not sure which and am hoping to get some perspective from people in healthcare or others who have dealt with a similar situation. Could really use some advice, much appreciation in advance.

My girlfriend, a type 1 diabetic, has been going to a doctor for the past year or so, and from the beginning getting ANY of her prescriptions that have been approved already by her doctor through to the pharmacy has been like pulling teeth. It’s to the point where the pharmacist was on the phone with the doctor’s staff giving them an earful about her “new” long acting insulin that has been in limbo for 3 months because they can’t be bothered to send it through to the pharmacy.

They, in return, fill a prescription for VIALS of her OLD insulin, and PEN NEEDLES. How is she supposed to use pen needles on a vial of insulin? The answer is she can’t. It’s impossible. Thank goodness she has syringes leftover from her PREVIOUS prescription. That they decided to send to the pharmacy for some reason. Not to mention what it’ll do to her body switching back and forth to types of insulin.

She has had to play phone tag with her insurance, the pharmacy and her doctor’s office, and in every case the doctor’s office is the one not communicating with anyone else or simply not doing paperwork that would have same day approval through her insurance. She literally had to make appointments with her doctor to ask to why her approved prescriptions aren’t being put through by the doctor’s staff, and apparently the doctor has addressed them regarding this but if anything the situation has gotten worse. She has literally been left without insulin because her staff cannot be bothered to put her prescriptions through to the pharmacy and we had to buy it over the counter.

We are finding her an endocrinologist so she doesn’t have to get her prescriptions through this office anymore, but is this not malpractice? Has anyone needing insulin or other life saving medication had to deal with a situation like this? The doctor herself is good and there’s nothing wrong with her but it’s like the staff are either completely inept or have something personal against her.

My mom and I both go to this doctor as well and have never had problems like this, and my mom is older and gets prescriptions more regularly than my girlfriend.

My girlfriend is a trans woman which is why I even bring up the possible issue of some sort of discrimination on the part of her staff. The doctor herself is very supportive, but obviously her staff have information that would out my girlfriend, so to speak.

We would really appreciate some opinions on how we can go forward regarding these issues with her medical staff because regardless of reasoning, this is neither professional nor acceptable behavior for people with power over whether or not people receive necessary, life saving medication and we’re worried that this may also be happening to other patients. Obviously she’s getting a new doctor. Thank you for reading and any advice.

And to be clear in regard for the rules of the subreddit we are not asking for medical advice.
