Im 32, Dad is 65 and a responsible person- he double checked that a needed cataract surgery would be covered by his insurance with both the DR’s medical group and insurance company. He was assured that his insurance was accepted.
After the 1st eye surgery was completed, he received a bill for $14,000. He contacted the Doctor’s staff and apparently the “surgery” wing of their practice isnt technically included in DR’s medical group. All of this under the same building & medical group. The staff did not communicate this despite his additional questioning.
I am deeply upset with US’s corrupt medical system and honestly considering medical tourism as the only viable option to avoid these corrupt “loopholes” by insurance, hospitals, and whoever. My parents could have travelled to another country and had the same surgery & THEN gone for a leisurely world tour across countries for $28K. My husband is from India- and just for sake of comparison, a Cataract surgery costs $100 without insurance there. With insurance it would be free.
From now on we will be demanding a insurance “confirmation letter” before deciding for a surgery.
Im sick to my stomach at how inhumane our costs of healthcare & education have become. We are upper middle class with a family owned business, and pay high taxes & insurance costs- but this is still happening.
Any Advice on how to resolve?? What can I do
