For background: I'm a Fresh adult (ok, 24, just not very good at anything yet) and I'm looking for a psychiatrist to help me treat what is probably adhd. A family member was diagnosed last year and over Christmas she indicated she thought I might have it, too. She made me read Driven to Distraction (E Hallowell and J Ratey) and I identified strongly with a lot of what they talked about. She also (sorry I know this is not good) gave me a couple of her doses of medication and it was absolutely world-changing for me. I finally felt normal and functional.
The problem: I'm trying to set an appointment with a psychiatrist and I have absolutely no idea how to navigate this system. Everything feels like it's in code and not what I expected. I managed to find a list of psychiatrists that my insurance cover but most of them work at City Health (group(?) that runs a big hospital in City). As far as I can tell all their offices (?) are at the location of the hospital. They have pages on this website that list their services but the categories are all either Pediatric Psychiatry, Psychiatric Emergency, or Behavioral Health, and the Behavioral Health page only talks about addiction resources. There's a brief note about the "Adult Outpatient Behavioral Health unit" but no other information on non-emergency services.
Questions: Do some/a lot of psychiatrists have offices in hospitals/hospital campuses? Does a psychiatrist have to specialize in a particular set of mental illnesses to recommend treatment or prescribe medication for them or can basically any psychiatrist do this? If a psychiatrist offers emergency psychiatric services is that like all they do or do they have regular old office hours like other doctors? If I call their appointment line is it weird if I ask any of these questions?
Sorry if these questions are dumb, I just don't really have anyone to help me figure this stuff out and it's been really frustrating :(
