[Question - Insurance] How does a person with a PPO protect themselves from all the non-participating providers during a hospital visit?

I had an emergency, went to a preferred hospital and thought I was good to go.

Now months later all these bills keep coming from providers I had no control over and they a charging me FULL NON-CONTRACT prices because they are not part of my health plan. I didn't ask for pathology, or radiology, or a second opinion anesthesiologist. But they sure have my name and number.

What could I have done during admitting to insulate myself from all this?
