I just aged off of my parents’ health insurance plan. I live in Colorado with a domestic partner I’ve shared a residence with for nearly 10 years. His job’s health insurance allows for domestic partner coverage but his premiums would go through the roof if I enrolled.
Can I still buy my own insurance through the marketplace and claim the income-based discount I would normally qualify for, or would this be considered fraudulent since I’m eligible for his insurance? We aren’t legally married, file separate taxes, don’t share bank accounts and I don’t use his surname. Furthermore, we have separate mailing addresses and I am not listed on our lease.
I know that if you’re married, you can’t claim the income-based discount on a separate insurance policy if you’re eligible for your spouse’s. I’m basically wondering if this same rule applies to domestic partners.
