[Other] unhealthy lifestyle

"There are many ways for individuals to better manage their stress without having to make unhealthy choices like smoking or drinking," said Stacey Reinoehl, BSN, Bronson's cardiac nurse navigator. "My favourite activities are yoga, breathing exercises and meditation - all of which have proven to help reduce the physical effects of stress on the body over time."

Here are six unhealthy lifestyle choices that people often make when they are stressed and that could have an impact on their heart health:

1. Eat junk food.

When you're stressed, a hamburger or pizza may look good at that time, but it's important to know what these types of foods are doing to your body over time. These foods are high in sodium and fat, which the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends avoiding.

2. Smoke.

When you smoke, you deprive your heart and blood of oxygen, which is vital for the functioning of your body. Smoking also inflames plaque growth in your arteries. By accumulating, plaque can block your arteries, which can cause a blood clot. If the clot is large enough, it can block blood flow to your artery. This can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

3. Drink alcohol.

Drinking excessively or constantly over time hurts the heart. The AHA recommends no more than two drinks per day for men and one drink a day for women. The more alcohol you consume, the more likely you are to have high blood pressure and a stroke.

4 Illegal drugs.

There is a huge range of illegal drugs that change the user’s state of mind.

Some induce euphoria and confidence, others alleviate pain or cause hallucinations.

The most well-known illicit drugs are cocaine, heroin and MDMA (known as "ecstasy").

Different drugs have different health effects, but there are common problems for all:

  1. More illnesses, deaths and disabilities are caused by substance abuse than by any other preventable health problem;
  2. Drugs weaken your immune system, which exposes you to infections
  3. some medications may cause nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain
  4. Some medications can cause heart disease it may be an abnormal heartbeat, but it can degenerate into a heart attack;
  5. Injected drugs, such as heroin, can cause your veins to sag and infections in your circulatory system
  6. seizures, strokes and other types of brain damage can be caused by certain types of drugs. This can leave you with long-term memory problems. Others can cause mental illnesses such as depression or schizophrenia;
  7. many addictive drugs, which means that users are forced to use the drug, whether they really like it or not. This can lead to financial and social problems because the user prioritizes drugs over other aspects of their lives;
  8. some drugs can kill by overdose.

But do not worry these is: How to adopt a healthier lifestyle
