My dad has a pituitary tumor that was removed in 2017. It has since grown back (the backstory of this is a clusterfuck but i wont go into those details). He went to a neurosurgeon in late November as soon as he found out, and the surgeon said he needed surgery to remove it again (surgery is through the nose). My dad asked if it could be scheduled before the end of the new year, for insurance purposes. They said it would be before Dec 31. It wasn’t - they never called and then they called after the new year to tell him it would be scheduled for Feb 20th. Then they rescheduled it for March 6th. Obviously its been nearly 3 months of my dad being stressed about the surgery at this point, so we were all happy it was finally happening. The doctor just called him today (4 days before surgery) saying they need to reschedule for the 26th (2 more weeks). My dad is furious - he had made arrangements at work, we had all taken time off at our jobs to be with him, etc. The surgeon said they had patients that were more “urgent” so they had to move his surgery down the line. My question is - IF my dad’s condition got worse in the 3 months he’s been waiting, or IF anything went wrong during surgery because the tumor grew more during those 3 months, or any complications arise - are the surgeons liable for this? A friend of mine said “well I would take them moving the surgery as a good sign, cause it means his condition isnt life threatening or severe enough to warrant any worry” - is that true? Am i overreacting because he’s my dad and i love him, or am i right to be worried?
TLDR; if a surgeon reschedules a surgery several times (during a 3 month period) does that mean the patient’s condition isnt anything to worry about, or is the doctor not held liable if anything goes wrong with the patient in the time they’ve been waiting?
