I am about to go on to my 3rd treatment protocol for my giardiasis which was first diagnosed in December. I don't know how I contracted these parasites. But stool samples showed the presence of Giardia lamblia. I am not in an undeveloped country and don't go camping and so on. I am in a major city in North America. I don't have any pets or children.
My initial response was almost immediate with Flagyl (Metronidazole) 250 mg, three times a day for 10 days. Intense diarrhea stopped within two days.
After a month, it resurfaced again as stool samples confirmed. The second bout of treatment was 500 mg of Flagyl for 7 days, 3x a day.
Two weeks after the second prescription where the medications was taken religiously every 8 hours and until finished, another stool sample shows the presence of Giardia, again due to symptoms recurring.
How does one ensure they can't get re-infected? Is it possible to make your hands completely sterile after going to the bathroom (bowel movement)?
What are the chances of cancer and suffering from permanent lactose intolerance as a result of medication?
Any helpful insight or comments is greatly appreciated.
